It grieves us deeply to announce the passing of Art Moore, the founder of Snorkel, a current Snorkel board member, and a pioneer in the access industry, on June 19, 2019. We have been incredibly fortunate to have been graced with Art’s innovative vision, insightful wisdom, whimsical humor and cheerful personality for 94 years.

Known for his drive and determination, Art’s career has set an extraordinary example and left a lasting impact on the global work at height industry. His imaginative designs and pursuit for quality helped to shape the industry in its infancy and set standards still followed to present day.

Developing 17 industry-defining models in less than a decade, Art built the foundation for Snorkel, today a leading global manufacturer of aerial lifts. He was probably most well-known for the Snorkel TB-42 telescopic boom which became a standard in the industry for many years, as well as the introduction of the first ‘big boom’ which reached 126 ft. (38m). His vision will continue to influence the company he started 60 years ago and the industry he changed for the better with his innovations.

Over the years, Art’s industry contributions have been recognized with honors like the International Awards for Powered Access Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, and induction into the American Rental Association’s Hall of Fame in 2017.  Following the acquisition of Snorkel by Don Ahern in October 2013, Art became a Snorkel board member providing his global insight and product knowledge.

Don Ahern, said, “For many years, Art Moore was a mentor to myself and others in the early years of the access rental and dealership business, and he ultimately became a close friend. He will be a great miss to Snorkel and the wider industry, and I send my sincere condolences to Sue and family at this difficult time.”

Art’s legacy extends beyond his outstanding achievements in the access industry. He lived for adventure, traveling around the globe, and never shying away from adrenaline with friends and family by his side.

Art is survived by his loving wife, Sue, and his daughter, Melissa Moore and husband Aaron Snyder; son, Arthur Jr.; daughter, Kristyn Sanders; stepdaughter, Lourenda Block; and grandchildren, Zen Moore, Aubrey and Ainsley Sanders.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Meierhoffer Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Missouri.  A service will be held on Friday, June 28 at 10:00am, followed by a burial in the Memorial Lawn.  A Celebration of Life will take place at Snorkel’s Elwood, Kansas facility at Noon on Friday, June 28.

New Product Launches As Snorkel Celebrates 60 Years of Innovation at Bauma 2019

Snorkel S3019E, SR1442 and SR1745
Snorkel S3019E, SR1442, SR1745

Snorkel, a leading global manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telehandlers, begins a week-long celebration of their 60-year anniversary as Bauma 2019 opens in Munich, Germany.

The company, which is celebrating ‘60 years of innovation’, is unveiling a number of new product launches at the tri-annual construction equipment show which attracts in excess of 500,000 visitors. Originally shown as a concept at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, the Snorkel S3019E makes its global debut as a pre-production unit at Bauma, and is anticipated to be in full production by Q4 2019, with orders for CE and ANSI units being accepted at the show.

This revolutionary 5.79m (19 ft.) slab scissor lift features a patent-pending design for its scissor stack which stows completely inside the chassis. This enables a low step-in height, as well as a low stowed height, meaning that it does not require folding handrails to pass through doorways. Equipped with electric drive and electric steering, and capable of lifting up to 250kg (550 lbs.), the S3019E delivers long duty cycles, and shares many features with the Snorkel line of hydraulic slab scissor lifts.

Showcasing another electric-powered innovation, Snorkel is displaying a preview of a lithium-ion powered electric Speed Level lift. Branded the Snorkel SL26E, this lithium-ion battery powered unit will deliver excellent four-wheel drive performance and 50% gradeability, just like its diesel-powered equivalent, the Snorkel SL26SL, as well as automatic self-levelling on slopes without the need for outriggers.

Bauma will also mark the official launch, outside of North America, for two new telehandlers. Joining the Snorkel SR626, the new Snorkel SR1442 and SR1745 expand the new Snorkel rough terrain telehandler line to three models. The new telehandlers are branded as the SR9244 and SR1045 respectively in The Americas. Equipped as standard with four-wheel drive and enclosed cabs with heat and air conditioning, the new SR1442 is capable of lifting up to 4,200kg (9,260 lbs.) and has a maximum lift height of up to 13.5m (44 ft. 4 in.), and a maximum forward reach of up to 9.5m (31 ft. 2 in.). The larger SR1745 has a maximum lift height of up to 16.4m (53 ft. 9 in.), and maximum forward reach of 12.6m (41 ft. 4 in.), and can lift up to 4,535kg (10,000 lbs.).

For the first time, Snorkel will exhibit CE compliant versions of their new mid-size telescopic boom lifts, the 14m (46 ft.) Snorkel 460SJ and the 20.1m (66 ft.) Snorkel 660SJ, which are now both available to order with European Stage V engines. Snorkel is expanding production of these units, with the 660SJ now being produced in Snorkel’s U.K. manufacturing facility, in addition to existing assembly in both U.S. facilities in Henderson, Nevada and Elwood, Kansas. The Snorkel 460SJ will also be added to the UK assembly facility in the coming months.

At Bauma, Snorkel is displaying CE compliant TM12E and TM16E models, marking their official launch outside of North America. With platform heights of 3.65m (12 ft.) and 4.87m (16 ft.) respectively, the TM12E and TM16E self-propelled telescopic mast lifts feature a zero inside turning radius, and smooth and efficient electric drive for a long duty cycle. Production of the electric drive Snorkel TM12E and TM16E has expanded from its original location in Henderson, Nevada, with both models now also being assembled in Snorkel’s UK facility.

The first CE compliant Snorkel S3215L will also be shown at Bauma. The Snorkel S3215L was introduced to the North American market in 2018, as a lightweight yet robust electric slab scissor lift, designed for use in areas with low floor loadings. Delivering a platform height of up to 4.6m (15 ft.), the S3215L has a lift capacity of 305kg (670 lbs.), yet weighs just 952kg (2,100 lbs.) with a floor loading at max. capacity of just 951.9kg/m2 (195 psf.). Produced in Henderson, Nevada, the Snorkel S3215L is now available to order globally, and shares many features with the Snorkel electric slab scissor lift family, that will also be on display.

On Snorkel’s 790sqm (8,500 sq. ft.) stand in the outdoor area, 28 Snorkel lifts will be on display, which in addition to the new product launches, will include many popular lifts, including the recently upgraded Snorkel A38E electric boom lift; Snorkel S3970BE and S2755RT compact rough terrain scissor lifts; Snorkel A46JE, A46JRT and A62JRT articulated boom lifts; the UL40 push-around mast lift; and low-level lifts, including the Snorkel S3010P and S3010E mini scissor lifts.

Founded in 1959 by Art Moore, Snorkel has roots in the firefighting industry, before entering the early AWP market with a number of innovative boom lifts, which helped to define the market as it is today. Celebrating this heritage, the Snorkel stand at Bauma 2019 will feature historical imagery displays and timelines, as well as being the venue for customer events daily.

As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations, Snorkel will showcase its range of material lifts with the giveaway* of a Snorkel ML24C construction-duty material lift at the show. The Snorkel ML24C weighs just 162kg (358 lbs.) yet can lift loads up to 295kg (650 lbs.) at a load center of 0.36m (14 in.) to heights of up to 7.4m (24 ft. 4 in.). Visitors to the Snorkel stand are invited to enter their business card into the prize draw for a chance to win the ML24C, which will be drawn at 7.00pm at the Snorkel stand on Friday, 12th April 2019.

Snorkel Launches Next-generation Electric Slab Scissor at Bauma 2019

Snorkel Launches Next-generation Electric Slab Scissor S3019E at Bauma 2019Shown as a concept at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, Snorkel is officially launching its next generation of electric slab scissor lifts at Bauma 2019.

In line with Snorkel’s anniversary year theme ‘celebrating 60 years of innovation’, the Snorkel S3019E pushes the boundaries of scissor lift design. Developed from the ground-up by Snorkel’s in-house engineering team, the Snorkel S3019E features a patent-pending design that enables the scissor stack to stow entirely inside the chassis.

This sunken scissor stack provides a low step-in height for the operator, which improves the ease of ingress and egress from the platform. It also results in a lower stowed machine height, of just 1.76m (69.1 in.), meaning it can be driven through standard doorways without the need for folding guardrails, and is already compliant with the upcoming ANSI A.92 standards which come into effect in December 2019.

New for Snorkel scissor lifts, the S3019E is equipped with both electric drive and electric steer, meaning there are no hydraulic hoses. This eliminates the risk of hydraulic leaks, meaning the lift is ideal for use in sensitive areas, and improves the duty cycle as there is less energy loss compared to hydraulic driven units.

The Snorkel S3019E can lift up to 250kg (550 lbs.) to a maximum platform height of 5.79m (19 ft.). Measuring just 0.77m (30.5 in.) wide, the S3019E is equipped with a 0.91m (36 in.) roll-out extension deck that expands the maximum working area to 0.61m (24 in.) x 2.6m (100.5 in.). Weighing 1,581kg (3,485 lbs.), the battery-powered S3019E has non-marking tires as standard, and is rated for one person plus tools for outdoor use.

Matthew Elvin, CEO, Snorkel said, “We believe that the Snorkel S3019E will disrupt the standard convention of what a slab scissor lift is. In terms of safety, the low step-in height is a major benefit, as a large proportion of jobsite accidents occur when operators are entering and exiting the working platform. From a productivity standpoint, the overall low stowed height eliminates the need to fold down guardrails, and the electric drive and electric steering provide a long duty cycle, and zero inside turning radius for greater maneuverability on the job.”

Shown as a pre-production unit at Bauma, both ANSI and CE compliant versions are now available to order, with the model expected to enter U.S. production in Q4 2019.

Snorkel Previews Lithium-ion Powered Speed Level at Bauma 2019

Providing a glimpse into the future of the company’s product development projects, Snorkel is showing a preview of its first-ever lithium-ion powered aerial lift at Bauma 2019, which opens today.

Branded the Snorkel SL26E, the new zero emission Speed Level will be powered by lithium-ion battery packs which offer a wide range of performance benefits when compared with the current diesel-powered equivalent.

Utilizing a 17kWh Hyperdrive lithium-ion battery pack with an integrated battery management system (BMS), the Snorkel SL26E will deliver extended duty cycles for longer, continuous operation on the jobsite.

The use of maintenance-free lithium-ion battery packs reduces running costs by up to 95% when compared to an engine, and are shown to last up to twenty-times longer than lead acid batteries. The low voltage system is easily serviced, without the need for specialist high voltage training, and has been tested in climatic chambers.

The zero emission, lithium-ion batteries also deliver significantly less jobsite noise. The new SL26E is 60% quieter than the existing Snorkel SL26SL.

Fitted with a 2.5kWh single phase battery charger, the battery packs can be rapid charged to 80% capacity within just 20 minutes utilizing an off-board charger, and the onboard charger enables a full charge in approximately 6.5 hours, at a significantly lower cost than the diesel equivalent.

The battery packs and battery management systems in the new Snorkel SL26E are developed by Hyperdrive Innovation, a Sunderland, UK-based developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage systems working with leading OEM off-road vehicle manufacturers.

Other than the power source, the hydraulic drive Snorkel SL26E shares the same 4-wheel drive performance, 50% gradeability and self-levelling capabilities without stabilizers up to 9° front to rear, and 13° side to side, as the Snorkel SL26SL. With a platform height of 8m (25 ft. 6 in.), a lift capacity of 680kg (1,500 lbs.) and a spacious 1.72m (5 ft. 8 in.) x 4.6m (15 ft.) platform with the 0.91m (3 ft.) roll-out deck extension deployed, the SL26E weighs 3,500kg (7,826 lbs.) and, available with non-marking tires, is ideal for all types of indoor and outdoor applications.

The lithium-ion battery pack system is designed to be scalable, and can be adapted to meet customer requirements and applications, such as tunnel work and long distance driving.

Shown as preview at Bauma 2019, the company plans to gauge customer feedback at the show.
